General election (the election) is one of the mechanisms for democratic leaders to change. It is nine times the Indonesian people that the people organizing the party.

Elections in Indonesia was initially intended to select the member institution representatives, the House of Representatives, provincial DPRD, and Legislative districts. After the fourth amendment of the 1945 Constitution in 2002, election presidential and vice-president (pilpres), originally done by the MPR, it was agreed to do so directly by the people pilpres also included in the electoral regime.

Pilpres a part of the election held on the first elections in 2004. In 2007, based on Law Number 22 Year 2007, the election of regional representatives and the head region (pilkada) is also included as part of the electoral regime.

In the middle of the community, the election term more often refers to the legislative elections and presidential elections and the vice president held every 5 years.
